25 years after, British songwriter sues Rock Band, U2

25 years after, British songwriter sues Rock Band, U2

Paul Rose, a British writer and guitarist with 12 solo albums of his own is suing popular rock band U2 (Bono, Edge and the boys) saying they jacked the music for "The Fly" (released by U2 in 1991) from his 1989 song "Nae Slappin."
In the court documents, Rose says he recorded a demo and gave it to Island Records, which circulated it and repeatedly listened to in its offices. That same year, Island Records signed U2 and Rose thinks it's no coincidence  that "The Fly" the lead single from U2's "Achtung Baby" album features a guitar hook and solo nearly identical to the one in "Nae Slappin."
It's not clear why Rose waited 25 years to sue, but he wants $5 million in damages.

Trump's female adviser Kelyanne Conway says women are their own enemies

Trump's female adviser Kelyanne Conway says women are their own enemies

Donald Trump's chief counsellor, Kelyanne Conway, 50, resoundingly shattered the glass ceiling when she became the first woman to lead a presidential campaign to victory. Speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, she said women are the ones constantly trying to tear each other down. She said:

'There are a lot of women who just have a problem with women in power.'
'You know, this whole sisterhood, this whole, "Let's go march for women's rights," and you know, just constantly talking about what women look like or what they wear, or making fun of their choices or presuming that they're not as powerful as the men around.'

'This presumptive negativity about women and power – I think it's very unfortunate.'
'I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity, late in the campaign, to work with an incredible team ... to help him get elected, particularly against a female candidate.'

'And Hillary Clinton should be applauded for being willing to serve publicly.'
Speaking on feminism, she said she doesn't ascribe to modern feminist values.

'It's difficult for me to call myself a feminist in the classic sense because it seems to be very anti-male, and it certainly is very pro-abortion in this context,' she said to applause. 'And I'm neither anti-male nor pro-abortion.'
'So there's an individual feminism if you will, that you make your own choices. I look at myself as a product of my choices, not a victim of my circumstances. And that's really, to me, what conservative feminism, if you will, is all about.'

Photos: Ghana Police arrest traders who stripped Nigerian woman naked, brutally beat and sexually assaulted her for allegedly stealing yam

Photos: Ghana Police arrest traders who stripped Nigerian woman naked, brutally beat and sexually assaulted her for allegedly stealing yam

Police in the Ashanti Region capital, Kumasi, have arrested an unspecified number of traders who stripped naked and beat up an unidentified  Nigerian lady alleged to have stolen items at the Kumasi Central Business District.
A screening exercise is expected to take place later Wednesday to identify those who actually participated in the brutal treatment meted out to the unidentified lady.

In the disturbing video that has gone viral on social media since Friday, February 17, a light-skin lady is seen being stripped naked and sexually assaulted in public by a mob over the alleged theft.

The video starts at a point where the young lady had been stripped off her clothes. She covered her waist with a yellow scarf given to her by a good Samaritan, but it was removed by the mob.

Another woman who offered a dress was shoved off and the young lady was not allowed to put it on. The mob made up mostly of men, tore the young lady’s red brassiere and panty. Some disgusting men hit her bum several times while some other disgusting men grabbed her breasts. At a point in the video, the men spread her legs open and kicked her private part many times.

Attempts by the young lady to prevent the mob from hitting her private part was met with even harder beatings.
One person who took part in the beating told a reporter that they stripped her naked and beat her because it is not good for a lady to engage in such an ungodly act.

Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor reportsWednesday morning that the women, mostly traders, who volunteered information that led to the arrest of the some of the attackers have also been picked up to assist with ongoing investigations into the incident.Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the assaulted lady remains unknown.

Shortly after the video went viral, many have condemned the heinous treatment of the woman. Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, Angela Dwamena Aboagye, recently joined gender activists to condemn the mob attack.

"Look at the manner in which they purported to arrest her, they stripped her and look at the acts of violence that were perpetuated against her. When it comes to women, this also sits within not just a social justice framework or criminal law framework, but within violence against women which is completely a human rights issue as well," she told Joy News.
Also, human rights lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu has urged the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to step up its education of human rights to curb abuses as Social Justice Day was observed globally Thursday.

In a release on Tuesday, OccupyGhana also joined calls demanding justice for the lady, asking that the police use the video to arrest the men responsible for the assault.

Donald Trump scraps Obama's Transgender bathroom bill

Donald Trump scraps Obama's Transgender bathroom bill

The Trump administration on Wednesday revoked federal guidelines which ordered that transgender students have the right to use public school restrooms that matched their gender identity. The administration lifted the federal guidelines on Wednesday that had been issued by the Obama administration back in May 2015.  It will now be up to states and school districts to interpret federal anti-discrimination law and determine whether students should have access to restrooms in accordance with their preferred gender identity or their biological sex.
Officials with the federal Education and Justice departments notified the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday that the administration is ordering the nation’s schools to disregard memos the Obama administration issued during the past two years regarding transgender student rights. The Obama memos said that prohibiting transgender students from using facilities that align with their gender identity violates federal anti-discrimination laws.

The two-page “dear colleague” letter from the Trump administration, said that the Obama directive needed to be withdrawn because it lacked extensive legal analysis, did not go through a public vetting process, sowed confusion and drew legal challenges.
The letter added that:
“Schools must ensure that all students, including LGBT students, are able to learn and thrive in a safe environment.” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement that his department “has a duty to enforce the law”.
Sessions wrote that the Department of Justice remains committed to the “proper interpretation” of the anti-discrimination law known as Title IX but said deference should be given to lawmakers and localities. He said:
“Congress, state legislatures, and local governments are in a position to adopt appropriate policies or laws addressing this issue,” Sessions said.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos agreed with the decision saying that is an issue:
“best solved at the state and local level. Schools, communities, and families can find and in many cases have found solutions that protect all students.”
DeVos also gave assurances that the department’s Office for Civil Rights “remains committed to investigating all claims of discrimination, bullying and harassment against those who are most vulnerable in our schools,” and she noted that she considers “protecting all students, including LGBTQ students, not only a key priority for the Department, but for every school in America.”

The decision drew immediate condemnation from gay and transgender rights advocates, who accused President Trump of violating past promises to support gay and transgender protections.

Advocates said the withdrawal of the federal guidance will create another layer of confusion for schools and will make transgender students, who are already vulnerable, more so.
“Attacking our children . . . is no way to say you support and respect LGBTQ people,” said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality.
Others said the practical effect on the nation’s schools would be muted, in part because a federal judge already had blocked the Obama guidance in response to a lawsuit from 13 states that argued it violated states’ rights.

The Trump administration’s move drew lots of approval from social conservatives who oppose the idea that a student can identify as a gender that differs from their anatomy at birth. Vicki Wilson, a mother with a child in High school said she sympathizes with children who have “difficult personal issues” to deal with, but thinks that “young men shouldn’t be permitted to deal with those issues in an intimate setting like a locker room with young women.”

School district officials in Palatine, bowing to federal pressure, allowed a transgender girl to change in the girls’ locker room at her school.

“No school should impose a policy like this against the will of so many parents,” Wilson said during a news conference organized by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal organization.

The letter also puts Trump squarely in the middle of the civil rights debate: Despite a flurry of activity in the early weeks of his presidency, Trump had not previously waded into the issue of gay and transgender rights. Trump declined to sign an executive order last month that would have dramatically expanded the rights of people, businesses and organizations of faith to opt out of laws or activities that violate their religion, such as same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Many took it as a sign that he would take a more liberal approach on gay issues than his Republican cohorts.

Advocates say federal law will still prohibit discrimination against students based on their gender or sexual orientation. Still, they say lifting the Obama directive puts children in harm's way.
'Reversing this guidance tells trans kids that it's OK with the Trump administration and the Department of Education for them to be abused and harassed at school for being trans,' said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.
